Bill Gross, founder of Idealab, develops a concept for a search engine that is solely focused on search. He names the engine "GoTo.com" to mark the site as a destination for millions of Internet users.

February, 1998.
Jeffrey Brewer is named chief executive officer. Bill Gross announces a proof-of-concept version of the Web site at the TED8 conference.

June, 1998.
Overture’s Web site launches with a search-only focus. The Pay-Per-Click model, later renamed Pay-For-Performance™, is introduced and enables businesses to participate in bidding auctions to determine their ranking in the search results. Overture announces 1,000 advertisers.
